Member Highlight – Agent: Jim Owen

Jim Owen’s journey into the world of title insurance began with a formative courthouse visit as a teenager, accompanying his father, a respected attorney in Alabama. That early exposure sparked an interest that would evolve into a lifelong career marked by innovation, community leadership, and enduring relationships.

After graduating from the University of Alabama in 1974 with a degree in Marketing and Finance, Jim began his professional career with a financial group specializing in second mortgages. The company’s in-house appraisal operations and the necessity for title insurance on those mortgages deepened Jim’s understanding of the industry.

In 1978, Jim relocated to Orange Beach, Alabama; then an unincorporated area, to join Guarantee Title Company of Mobile, working out of their Gulf Shores office. His move marked the beginning of a transformative era for title services along the Alabama Gulf Coast.

In 1985, Jim partnered with Herbert Malone to form what is now Gulf Shores Title Company, Inc., acquiring the Gulf Shores office from Guarantee Title. By 1988, Jim had bought out Malone’s interest and assumed full leadership of the company. Under his guidance, Gulf Shores Title grew steadily, driven by Jim’s belief in the power of relationships and his commitment to outworking the competition.

Jim’s involvement in real estate development fostered key relationships and partnerships with various development groups, further expanding his influence in the region. His entrepreneurial spirit also led him to become an original stockholder and founder of a local bank, reinforcing his commitment to supporting the financial and economic growth of his community.

Jim’s leadership extended far beyond the office. He served as:

  • President of the Gulf Shores Kiwanis Club
  • Chairman of the Board of the Alabama Gulf Coast Area Chamber of Commerce
  • President of the University of Alabama Baldwin County Alumni Chapter
  • Chairman of the Board of Gulf Shores United Methodist Church

These roles not only reflected his dedication to community service but also helped foster the connections that fueled Gulf Shores Title’s expansion. Offices were opened in Foley, Orange Beach, Lillian, and Bay Minette, solidifying the company’s presence across the region.

One of Jim’s greatest sources of pride is the longevity and loyalty of his team. Five current employees have worked with him for over 20 years, and many others have spent decades under his leadership before retiring – a testament to the culture of respect and commitment he cultivated. Jim Owen’s story is one of vision, perseverance, and a deep-rooted belief in the value of hard work and human connection. His legacy continues to shape the title insurance landscape and the communities he has served so faithfully.

Jim and his wife Shelley enjoy spending time with their five grandchildren, three dogs, and a horse, embracing the joys of being lifelong residents of Baldwin County.
